Summary:
The stabilisation is a
key-step in sewage sludge treatment and the anaerobic digestion is the most
common stabilisation-process in Germany and the EU. In this paper the
state-of-the-art in science, research and practise are explained. Recent
developments in process optimisation are presented, especially the two-stage
digestion and the disintegration of excess sewage sludge. The degree of
degradation can be increased by 10 to 20 % using these processes, although a
bigger portion of the drymass measured as organic matter can not be degraded by
the anaerobic digestion. Nevertheless the anaerobic digestion has a number of
benefits and will be of great importance in sludge handling for the future.
